Every year right before the Easter holiday, the staff at the Bangor Humane Society see an increase of adopters looking for a rabbit to adopt. While staff understands the appeal of the fluffy, floppy-eared, four- legged pets as an Easter gift for their younger family members, this year they are hosting a Rabbit 101 awareness event for the public in an effort to teach individuals about the extensive care these furry creatures require before bringing them into the home.
The goal of the Rabbit 101 Event is to help decrease the number of rabbits abandoned or surrendered because of preventable reasons such expense, care required or unrealistic expectations by offering an educational forum. In the last year alone, the number of rabbits that BHS has taken in has doubled. From March 2014 to March 2015, the number of rabbits abandoned by owners made up ¼ of the rabbit intake at the shelter and that statistic increased to 1/3 of the intake from March 2015 to March 2016.
Therefore, for anyone interested in potentially adopting a rabbit now or in the future, or for new rabbit owners who would like to increase their knowledge of rabbit care, BHS invites them to the interactive educational and family-oriented event this Saturday between 1 pm and 3 pm. Anyone interested can join them for a fun-filled Easter Eve, talking about rabbits and how there’s more than meets the eye when it comes to these fluffy critters. Led by BHS Adoption Counselor Alicia and long-time volunteer Julia, two rabbit owners themselves, individuals will learn lots of great info about bunnies!
Rabbits are super smart, can be litterbox trained, and are easily socialized with other animals/other rabbits. Often times people let their rabbits free roam in their houses (after they’ve bunny-proofed them of course)! Staff wants to talk with individuals about all the smart things rabbits can do, and answer any questions about how to care for them! BHS will also have some materials on hand from River Road Veterinary Hospital in Orrington. River Road Vet specializes in the care of rabbits and other small animals, and would love to provide veterinary care for an adopter’s new forever friend! Staff will also have a few rabbits available for adoption, and will be looking to find them some great forever homes.
On top of all the great information, we will be having a raffle – $1 for 5 tickets – for baskets donated by Blue Seal and PetSmart full of goodies for your rabbit! BHS will have coloring pages available for little ones, and some sweet rabbits available to be loved on. Staff will also have some fun giveaways – so stop by to get in on the action! Rabbit 101 will be held at the Bangor Humane Society, 693 Mount Hope Avenue in Bangor!
